ABC for ALL Khangas - Educational Textiles for Early Learners
Low literacy levels and limited traditions for reading are a challenge across Africa, most
seriously in rural communities. The ADEA Foundation, in cooperation with ADEA in Tanzania,
has developed an innovative way of using the familiar traditional khanga textile as the conduit to
expose children (and adults) to print. This play-based community approach to learning is seen as
innovative and viable by specialists in early childhood literacy in Africa. Our content resembles
what is printed in books but is presented in a much more durable, playful, and dirty-child-
friendly way.
