The MaKuYa Traditional Culture Museum and Learning Center is a place to discover the rich heritage of the tribal communities of the Mtwara region (primarily the Makonde, Makua and Yao tribes), as well as to help our young visitors in their studies with play-based activities related to literacy, geography, and math. Our museum emerged from our annual MaKuYa Traditional Cultural and Performing Arts Festival in that one aspect of the festival was dedicated to cultural learning. Our ever-expanding museum provides a year-round opportunity for local and international visitors to better understand the rich cultural heritage of the tribal communities in the Mtwara region. We house a large collection of artifacts as well as stories about their uses and cultural significance.
